+ Montreal-based art director Christian Lemay contacted me to photograph Anne Kothawala, the new President of the National Convenience Stores Distributors Association for CSN Magazine. NACDA is a trade association made up of members who distribute food, beverage and general merchandise for the convenience store market.
Member organizations service convenience stores locally, provincially and nationally. Many of these members are family-owned companies that have been in operation for several decades, some more than 100 years.
We shot in an upscale convenience store in the recently refreshed Yonge-Eglinton centre. I find the challenge of working in live spaces both exciting and deeply frustrating. Don't let the final image deceive you, the store was very busy. It was packed most of the time without anyway of clearing the space for the shoot. Sadly, when a location owner/operator is kind enough to loan a space to you, you don't yell at his snail-like customers. You huff and puff in your head and drink too many cans of Diet Coke.
In the end, it worked out beautifully - Anne looks toward a sunny future for Canadian convenience stores.
